Prevent Early Onset of AMD With Regular Eye Checkups

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is irreversible damage to your retina's macula. While this disease doesn't affect your peripheral vision, it can cost you your central vision, in which case you won't be able to see the fine details of an object, whether it's placed close to you or further away.

Since AMD generally affects individuals who are over 50 years old, the expert at Macula & Diabetic Eye Center insists that you schedule routine eye checkups.

24/7 emergency services are available! We also help set-up patients with a co-pay assistance grant for macular diseases. This is a non-profit advocacy organization that provides resources for the cost of expensive medications allowing all patients the best care possible without financial concerns.

Are You at Risk of Developing AMD?

Don't wait until your vision is blurry. Find out whether you have AMD! With routine checkups, our expert can keep an eye out for early signs of macular degeneration and begin the treatment if it turns out that you're susceptible to the disease.

You're likely to develop AMD if you:
  • Are overweight
  • Smoke cigarettes
  • Are over 50 years old
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have a family history of AMD
  • Eat a diet high in saturated fat
  • Have heart disease or high cholesterol
  • Are Caucasian (Caucasians have an elevated risk of developing AMD)

Learn About Dry and Wet AMD

Affecting about 80% of the population, dry AMD is the most common form of the disease. With age, parts of the macula get thinner and small clumps of protein, called drusen, grow. As the disease progresses, you'll slowly lose your central vision. Although experts in the field are working hard to develop a cure, it is currently untreatable. Vitamin therapy can slow the process down, however.

Wet AMD, on the other hand, is when new, abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina. This is a lot less common than dry AMD but far more serious. The blood vessels can leak blood or other fluids that scar the macula. People suffering from this form of macular degeneration tend to suffer vision loss at a more rapid rate. This is highly treatable with injections if caught early. Don't delay!
